DevLog #2: March 27 - April 3, 2023

This week the spent time looking over the feedback we received from prototype testers. Some of these testers had experience in the field of music and more specifically synthesizers and were able to give us some really solid critiques as well as advice. Some of this advice is as follows:

  • App AR component feels slightly clunky and does not give user validation

  • Not enough puzzle pieces to experiment

  • Not very intuitive

  • Not enough features

  • Failed to see AR goal with puzzle pieces

We have worked to address these issues in our current build. We added a songbook to let the user test synth effects on actual songs. We also focused on improving the performance of C-Note's AR image recognition and tracking by redesigning the puzzle pieces and tuning some parameters. Hopefully, this will allow users to load effects directly from real-world puzzle pieces more easily and intuitively. This week we also refactored our synth code to use FMOD instead of PureData, which will allow us to add way more audio effects in the future. As of now, we've added chorus and reverb (sans AR detection, as we still need to design puzzle pieces for them). Additionally, we built out a basic chaining system with puzzle pieces to help visualize the AR element of C-Note, and improve the teaching function of the synth. Although this is closer to our design goals, it is not quite to the level of function we desire, so we've left it out of this prototype; expect more on this in the future! Finally, we've updated our website to better explain the purpose and function of C-Note.

Looking forward, we are still discussing adding music composition to the app, although perhaps not through AR. We also want to visualize the waveform with effects using AR, having it change dynamically as the user builds their sound. We are considering additional applications of AR as well, in order to truly push the boundaries of what AR can do. Ultimately, we hope to finish a fully feature-complete prototype by the time we release our alpha.
